Wrinkly Brains

26 January 2006

Is it wrong that today in my honors math class we discussed the fact that some people donate their body to science?

It all started when one boy asked if my brain was wrinkly. I had just explained a hard (to them) math problem and he said my brain must be really wrinkly because I was so smart and knew all this stuff. I replied that I didn’t know, I hadn’t seen my brain. But I have touched a brain in a science class in college. And that led to where they got the brain and how some people donate their bodies to science for research just like some people donate their organs. So we spent a few minutes talking about that. It was interesting and fun. I like that kind of random thing.

On another note, I had two new students in first period today. One moved here today from another middle school in our town. He did not know how to do what we working on. He sat in the back beside our new student from last week, who speaks very little English. I sat between them for most of the second half of first period trying to teach one kid, in broken Spanish, how to solve an equation and do long division, while trying to teach another kid in English how to solve an equation and do long division. Augh!! The other new kid in the class is just a switch from third period, so he knew what was going on, thankfully!

I also had a boy talk about buying purses. We talked about equation situations in real life and when I asked him what he would buy if he went to a store right now, he said purses. So we went with it and made a nice equation about buying purses. See…math can be fun!

I don’t like thinking up titles. They always seem cheezy and I am just going to ramble anyway so whats the point. Lydia and I had SUCH a fun time this past weekend. We hung out on Thursday night and Friday and did lots of great stuff, such as…shopping with matching purses, finding cheap clothes, trying Krystal burgers, squeezing the contents of our wallets into wallets at Target to see which one to buy and hopeing no one thought we were trying to shoplift, riding a bike inTarget, acting like professional photographers, “exercising creativity”, chasing ducks, trying not to step in duck poo, picnicing, and watching a very interesting movie. Oh and of course girl talk for many hours! :) It was a blast! Here is my best picture from our photography experience, I might put others up if Lydia does :) Lydia, thank you for your friendship! You are a gem! As Cliff would say, “It’s quacktastic!”

2 January 2006

I am a blog idea stealer. Since not much is happing and I”m just hanging out around home, here is a recap of 2005 that I stole off another blog.

1. What did you do in 2005 that you’d never done before?
I graduated from college, I was a matron of honor in a wedding, I taught my own classroom, I made a salary big enough to support us (kind of).
2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I am not much for making these, because precious few are ever kept by anyone, much less me. A general ongoing goal is to improve my spiritual walk and be more disciplined about reading the Word.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Holly and Laura and Dawn all had sweet little girls this year :)
4. Did anyone close to you die?
No, but our community did loose two very special men of faith.

The US. (Pittsburgh and Pensacola were my farthest destinations)
6. What would you like to have in 2006 that you lacked in 2005?
More confidence/effectiveness/positive attitude at teaching
7. What dates from 2005 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Driving in a bus with Cliff and college students, namely some loud sophomore boys (Dustin, Casey, Brain) all over Pittsburgh, hanging out with Erin before her wedding trying not to kill us while driving around, graduating and my bracelet falling off halfway across the stage and some important regent guy handing it to me
