Quote of the day…

20 February 2007

I have one student in first period who is a sweetheart, always volunteering, a hard worker, asked me to come watch his basketball game, just in general a good student. He moved here after his family lost everything due to Katrina and his family chose to stay in part because the education system is better here. He is african american but since he is in Spanish class, and he is a hard working student in there too, he knows Spanish fairly well. He occasionally says things in Spanish, probably mostly to impress the cute Spanish-speaking girls in that class. And I know some Spanish, so I occasionally respond to things kids say in Spanish or say things to the class like “cinco minutos” when I am trying to tell them they have five minutes left to do something. Well today this student says “que hora es?” and I proceed to respond what time it is. Then comes the quote of the day…

“Miss is tight, she know Spanish!”

Things like that make other parts of the day (such as when I gave about half the fifth period detention) bearable.

Another funny thing to mention, we have started going to a Sunday night Life Group at the church we have been attending. Yesterday was the second week to meet. We are studying the book “Ten Questions to Diagnose Your Spiritual Health” by Donald Whitney. During discussion some ladies who are in their sixties-eighties brought up Brittney Spears and Anna Nicole Smith as related to the topic of the spiritual thirst of the empty soul: non-believers. Cliff and I thought it was funny that these ladies knew all about these young floosies!

Babies and Lasagna and Cold

14 February 2007

Baby fever, everywhere! (No Mom, we are not having one.) I found out yesterday that a good friend is pregnant. I found out yesterday that another good friend is hoping to be expecting within the next year. I already have two other friends pregnant as well as several people in my sunday school class. It’s everywhere!!!! It makes me excited and it makes me hope that when I am pregnant I will live near some friends who are pregnant too to share the fun and excitement! I think pregnant women look so cute and maternity clothes can be really cute.

On another note, I just made a yummy lasagna. The Kraft Food and Family Magazine is free and has great recipes in it. This lasagna was good because you don’t have to boil the noodles prior to baking. You just put it in with all the ground turkey/spaghetti sauce and cheese mixture goodness, add in some extra water to make the noodles get soft, and voila! Yummy lasagna in an hour and a halfish.

It is so cold right now! I am not a fan of cold weather. It has snowed three or four times this winter. Right now it is probably below freezing. And our apartment doesn’t heat very well so it always feels cold to me. Cliff drug out the electric floor heater today to help add some warmth. I feel like I have been layering for years and I am ready to see some warm weather! I bought really cute bermuda shorts at the end of the summer and didn’t get to wear them very much before it got cold, so I am ready to break those out!

Life lately

6 February 2007

I had a nice birthday weekend. Friday at school, I got a card and a song from my most frustrating class. And it was a really easy day teaching-wise so that is always nice. My parents came up and took us out to eat at Cheddars and brought me a cake. We had a nice visit with them. I got to hang out with a friend late on Saturday night. And we took it easy on Sunday.

Today started TAKS tutoring at school. It went well and I am glad we get paid for it instead of just having to do it out of the goodness of our hearts. 8 weeks til the big test! I have no idea how my kids are going to do. I feel like they should do well just based on the fact that they have 90 minutes of math class. But they only pay attention like 15 of those minutes, so sometimes it is all such a loss it seems. Lots of kids at school are sick. I had 14 absenses from 85 kids. That is way more than normal. I am very glad I got my flu shot or else I might be sick too.

I do not like being cold. My nose is cold and I have goosebumps as we speak. I wanted to have ice cream for dessert, but it was too cold so I had birthday cake instead. (And it was good!!) Last month we had a very high electric bill. So we turned down the heater, unplugged stuff, turned off lights more than normal, and basically did everything we could to make it better. We got weatherstripping installed around the doors today. This month it is $100 more. So we are having some people check stuff out tomorrow because this just does not make sense. I hope the meter is broken, because that is the only thing that would mean we don’t have to pay all of this bill. I am going to go get under a blanket now.
