Letters to next year's sixth graders

29 May 2008

I did a similar assignment as a friend. Here are some of the comical results. The only thing I added is the occasional comma, to be able to read the run-ons better.

To get on Mrs. -’s good side:

  • Compliment her on her hair
  • Ask good reasonable questions when needed
  • Always bring a writing utensil
  • Never wax your desk with toe jelly (from the most random kid ever!)
  • Pay attention and an occasional box of chocolates
  • NEVER talk while the teacher is talking, I’ve gotten in trouble tons of times for it.
  • NOT be obnoxious
  • Offer to pass out papers every once in a while
  • Be funny and make her laugh
  • Be a big kiss-up, it works for all the sixth grade teachers but you also have to have manners.

When you enter sixth grade, don’t worry about the bad stuff that may happen to you like getting stuffed in a locker by 8th graders, that only happens on TV. You are divided from the 7th and 8th graders, they are upstairs.

Some helpful hints are never get involved in a physical fight, and to never insult an AP, administrator, teacher, or any other adults.

There are many great teachers here, but there are also bad ones. If you get the bad ones, do what they say or you’ll be finished.

Never cheat, steal, or let your cell phone go off. You will end up in the principals office. I have never been personally but I’ve seen it happen and I hear its not that fun.

If you want to survive sixth grade, don’t tell unless someone got hurt.

Don’t start anything or you will get in a fight or get in some DRAMA!

Some advice for sixth grade is don’t get involved in all the drama, don’t be a rebel, and dress out in PE.

If you care about yourself, do not buy from the lunch line, the pizzas are grease!

My favorite part of sixth grade is friends, sports, and girls.

If you are in Mrs. -’s class run! J.K. (just kidding) I am a seventh grader if you are reading this now. My favorite thing in 6th grade was nothing. I did not enjoy 6th grade.

Don’t be disrespectful to Mrs. – you will be put to consequences and don’t chew gum if you want a fun year.

Some hints for sixth grade is never get your hand slammed by the locker doors. I personally witnessed it myself.

Today was the last day of school for the kids. They were literally counting down in a giant voice of unison….and they kept starting over, because they were ringing the bells manually and no one really knew when it was going to ring. They literally ran out of our hallway screaming in glee! It was crazy! And all the teacchers followed outside to the bus lines to usher/herd them onto the busses. And then all the teachers waved the busses off, apparently a tradition at my school. It was a very long day and my vote is for half day at the end of next year. You can fill 3 hours with entertainment, but 8????? So starting Monday, I am free. Anyone wanna hang out!? :)

Home Sick

20 May 2008

Hey faithful readers

I am home sick today. Only 7 days left of school including today. Never fear, it is nothing serious, just some sniffles. Had a little fever last night but nothing that 13 hours of sleep won’t cure. One thing I found out a month or two ago when some friends came over, is that most of the medicine we have expired at about the same time I graduated from college (which would be 2005). Which is a blessing that we don’t get sick enough to need medicine more frequently. But really, when I get a cold or something, I tend to just tough it out because I don’t know which medicine to use or which will really work. For example I don’t like Claritin, because has never helped me, but is a 24-hour dose, which makes me feel like if I take Tylenol Sinus or something after like 4-6 hours of Claritin not working, I am somehow overdosing on cold medication. And I try to avoid things that don’t say “non-drowsy” if I am going to work, because I have found that if I already feel like an elephant is sitting on my nasal cavity, medicinally-induced drowsiness is only adding insult to injury while trying to instruct pre-teens in the proper use of a negative sign. Oh-I thought I would hurt me some chillens yesterday! A cold doesn’t do much for the patience of a teacher at the end of the year. I didn’t take the day off because I didn’t have anything good (read: mind numbing and long) to leave for the substitute to enforce, and I had like a million people signed up to attend tutoring since they can’t get their act together during the normal school day. But I figured that if I survived the day and still felt miserable, I would for sure take today off. My current health status is that I can breath partially through my nostrils, and only blow my nose or sneeze every 10 minutes as opposed to every 2 minutes which was the time limit yesterday.

So you should have seen me in the pharmacy section of my friendly HEB central market yesterday. I was throwing products in the fun little baby shopping cart like no other. I bought three types of cold medicine figuring on doing some market research. So far HEB-lenol Cold Relief Head Congestion Day Non-Drowsy worked pretty good. This morning I took HEB-dafed Nasal Decongestant PE Non-Drowsy Maximum Strength and it is holding up pretty well too. (After getting home I realized that the third kind I bought was really just the actuall Tylenol brand of the same stuff.) Two kinds of chapstick – Blistex for the medicinally tingle-y goodness that helps when you can’t breathe, and actual chapstick brand with SPF because my hubby claims that the kind I use “isn’t really chapstick” and “doesn’t really protect your lips from anything”. And it is kinda hard to get out of the tube, so maybe I will see if there is a better alternative. I also got another bag of cough drops, some chewable multi vitamins (because although the hub and I like Flinstones, they probably don’t have enough nutritional value for adults) and some chocolate calcium chews that my doctor recommends for all girls in their 20′s. (Hear that girls? Get some.) Then for the real medicinal items:

Nutty Bars, Dr. Pepper, and an issue of Real Simple.

That, my friends, is splurging for the sake of getting well! :)

Random Bullets of Life (Kasey-style)

14 May 2008
  • My dog has a lot of hair. She got brushed today and there were dog hair tumbleweeds all over the patio.
  • There are only 10 days of school left. On the one hand that sounds crazy, this year has FLOWN past! But on the other hand, I am so ready to be done. I am loosing the little bit of patience that I have left QUICKLY!
  • Smartboards are really cool. They are these things that you can connect to your computer and projector and you can write on it with these special pens that really don’t have ink and you can move things around on the board like you would with a mouse. The kids really like them. I like it better than using the overhead projector and transparencies because with those you get these weird blue or black smudges on the side of your hand. (“Interactive whiteboards” is what the website calls them.)
  • I always spell wierd wrong. I just did it again. Weird.
  • This is a very cool website about a school for autistic children that a family member of mine is starting. Check it out if you are interested in that sort of thing. They are just starting so they can use scholarships/donations.
  • I have new black reef flip flops that are going to be so comfortably-wonderful this summer!
  • We got our HDTV receiver to work with our bunny ears since we don’t have cable. It gives us more channels. Extra weather channels and 5 whole TBN-ish channels. So we can actually see NBC now to watch The Office. And I like me some weather channels. I like to be able to know precisely where any storm cell and potential tornado is at any time. I think I would like to be a meteorologist. One time when I really hated teaching, I tried to find out where I could go to school for that. There aren’t many programs out there for that in Texas. So I am still teaching. :)

Check it out!

This is a super cool book that I just got! It tells you what is a good choice at many restaurants. And there are lots of pictures, so it is not just a boring diet book with paragraphs about carbs to read.

So the hub went to Guatemala. Of course I never like it when he is gone, but the Lord blessed with a peace and I didn’t spend the whole week worrying about him. (Just a few times..) I got to spend some fun time with my parents while he was gone, they were sweet to keep me company. :) Now it is May and I can’t believe it. This year has gone SO fast! Only like 20 more days of school…. I am so excited about a summer where I am not MOVING! RELAXATION, HERE I COME! Speaking of…I am going to take this opportunity to go to bed early. Adios Muchachos. By the way, I really am liking some of those blogs of random people I don’t know…some are very entertaining. So check those out too if you get bored.
