Redesign accomplished!

22 September 2008

Remember last week when I talked about rearranging at my house? Well on Thursday, we stayed up really late and rearranged the things we talked about. I am very pleased with the result. Now at about 12 something, I remembered that I was going to take before and after pictures. Well I forgot to take them, so I had to go back and try to find a before picture from when we moved in. So here is the best before and after I can find.

Goals: get the computer into the living room, set up a second place to watch tv, make the hub’s desk a more useful place.

We moved the chair out of the bedroom and the bookshelf from the living room in.

before

after

We moved my desk into the living room (in the place the bookshelf was) so that whoever is on the computer is in the same room and hanging out with whoever is watching tv. (No good before picture. Imagine a bookcase there.)

And the blue chair from the living room ended up in the office with the tv since we got a new tv that was given to us. (This wasn’t a good before, it was when we were moving, but there was a desk where that blue chair is!)

before

after

Whew, is anyone tired yet? We sure were!

And to Lydia, thanks for the magnets in the giveaway! I used them to make a fun collage on my ugly yellow filing cabinet! :)

Apparently, lots of other people are having the same urge to work on things in their home.

What my Hubby loves…

Chelsea tagged me in this so here is my post on what my husband loves. It kind goes with the visuals post about me that I did a while back.

All things Superman related

The band MercyMe

All sports teams from Dallas really, but especially the ‘boys

He loves to watch ESPN. He is sad that we don’t have cable for this reason alone.

He likes gadgets and technology.

He enjoys the TV show “The Office”.

And I have to end with the same last two as Chelsea, because they are true.

He loves his family.

And he loves me. :)

Now I tag: Jan, Brit, and mab!

Redesign

17 September 2008

Ever feel the itch to redesign things?

Do you like to rearrange furniture?

Organize cabinets or closets?

Totally redo your blog layout more often than you even write new posts?

I feel like that a lot.

As a kid, if I got bored in the summer or something, a fun thing for me to do would be to organize my closet or rearrange my bedroom. Go ahead, you can say it. I am a nerd. I know this fact. One of the biggest sadnesses about not having cable anymore is the lack of “Clean Sweep” that is being watched in this house. Anyone know how to break into the professional organzing scene?

I remember one time I decided to change my room to a different bedroom. See we had two almost identical bedrooms upstairs. I was the one by the bathroom. I decided to move across the stairs to the other one. Why, I don’t know. But my mattress at the time was not what one would call the sturdiest thing. It basically folded like a hot dog bun when moved. My mom and I laugh a lot together, but we have probably never laughed so hard as that day when we tried to lug that awful floppy ole thing across the landing at the top of the stairs into the other room. It was hilarious! Sometimes I would want to rearrange and mom would be busy and not able to help me. (Or she was avoiding moving furniture that clearly did not NEED moving.) I rearranged that whole bedroom by myself, which included moving a big full chest of drawers that the drawers could not be taken out of. My mom came up to see my room and was like “how did you move that thing!” I guess I just leaned on it til it got shoved across the room! Nothing like a little determination!

Today I organized the garage. It was only somewhat satisfying because I decided to throw away lots of big boxes that we had kept from things we bought like vaccuums and the new entertainment center and such. But the trash guy had already come, so I just had to pile them in the middle of the garage until the next trash day. So there is just as much stuff in there as it started with. But I did do some rearranging so hopefully the things we need are closer to access and the things we don’t need (such as camping gear and aquariums) are in the cubby hole that we can’t reach as easily.

And then hubby came home and said he wanted to rearrange our office. We might do this another day this week, but rearranging that room will really spill over into other rooms. See, we don’t really need an office that much any more because we aren’t students who have to sit at computer desks with our books writing research papers. (PTL!) And therefore hubby’s desk is really just a catch-all. My desk ususally houses our laptop, even though I bought it specifically so that I could do projects like sewing and scrapbooking on it. And we kinda want to put the laptop in the living room so that in the evenings, if he is playing video games and I am on the computer, we are at least hanging out in the same room. So anyway, if we end up doing some fun rearranging, I will try to take “before” and “after” pictures to show you our mad room design skillz.

Do any of you enjoy rearranging as much as I do?

(Note to Lydia: you should post a picture of your new living room arrangement! You know, in all your spare time!)

Watch out for Ike!

12 September 2008

Things to do to get ready for a hurricane to hit H-town:

1. Stock up on water (and pet supplies).

Check.

Preferably go to the store several days in advance because if you wait to the last minute you might get a black eye.

2. Bring in all plants and patio furniture and anything else that could become flying debris. (Inspect plants thoroughly for any snakes before bringing them into your home.)

Check.

3. Watch about 72 hours of pre-landfall hurricane coverage.

Check.

And when you don’t have cable this means that hurricane coverage is really the only thing on. I mean, there really are only two channels with normal shows, and then there is the 5 Jesus channels, PBS, and the channels in espanol.

4. Proceed to “hunker down”.

Check.

Gracie is helping. She is a little nervous, I think she thinks we are going to go somewhere and leave her. We plan to spend the evening in our dining room, which is basically protected from windows. We can wheel our TV around the corner into there so we can watch until power goes out. Then we can watch on the hubby’s little battery powered one. We have a “raft” as Anthony Yanez recommended, to protect our heads in case we get a tornado or something falls on the roof. But the tornados are really supposed to be on the other side. Pray for my parents, they are staying home and they are on the east side which means more tornadoes possibly and wind. They boarded up and everything and have never had any water in their house from a storm. We were out of school today, which was good for people to get ready. It is cloudy here (3pm on Friday) but that’s really about it. There is already a lot of water in Galveston just from the regular waves, not even the storm surge yet, so that is kinda wierd.

Everyone take care!

Baylor China

6 September 2008

Check this out! It is Baylor china! And you can also get it for various other universities. Apparently, it is based in the Woodlands and the plates are made here. A portion of the price goes back to the university. It’s pretty but at $52 a plate, I think it is too expensive for us.
