Girls Night Out

24 January 2009

Look who I went to see on Thursday night… yup, on the right is Kate, from Jon and Kate + 8! (My camera has a pretty good zoom!)

I absolutely LOVE that show. Too bad we don’t have cable so I don’t get to watch it all that often. Sometimes I stay at school to grade papers late so I can watch it on the cable in my room. (Yes, I have cable in my classroom. Why?  I don’t know. But it did come in handy when watching the Inauguration.)

It was a neat event. Lysa Terkeurst also spoke. You may have seen her story on Oprah before, her community adopted like 45 boys from a Liberian boys orphanage choir that came to sing in their town. Really neat story. She talked about how when women say yes to God, they can change the world. And she struggled with what that looked like, thinking that homeschooling her newly adopted boys and doing laundry didn’t look like changing the world but it really was. So whatever you are doing right now might not feel like you are changing the world, but it might really be if it is what God told you to do!

And Kate herself tells some mighty fine tales of God’s faithfulness to her during that crazy pregnancy with six babies. Many of the stories she told are in her book, Multiple Blessings. She talks about how God gave her strength and peace when she was on bedrest for more than half a year. And how later she realized that God knew exactly what day her babies were going to be born. And his provision when Jon lost his job twice because of the cost to insure them and how he provided so that didn’t have to go into debt during that time. Great book! I have it, you can borrow it if you want, just let me know!

More Mensa

21 January 2009

Here is another one for you. Especially if you are more word-y than math-y.

Complete the sentence by filling in the blanks with four words that each differ by one letter. The changed letter will be in the same position in each word, as in bake, bale, base, and bane.
The disco owner ____ confidently down the aisle as he _____ to set up the  ______ light before the ______ of midnight.

Mensa Puzzle and Chikin

14 January 2009

Ok, so this isn’t exactly 6th grade level but I thought some of my readers would enjoy it! My math team leader gave me a desk calendar which has a Mensa puzzle on it for each day. (Mensa is a club for geniuses, or something like that.) This is the easiest one I have come across. See if you are a genius.

A banquet hall contains only chairs and round tables, and has 10 chairs at every table. Each table has 8 legs and each chair has 4 legs. The total number of legs on all of the chairs and tables is 960. What is the maximum number of people that can be seated(one per chair) at a banquet in this hall?

(honor system…get your answer before looking at the comments!)

Also…Chick-Fil-A’s around here are giving away a free chicken biscuit or chicken minis on Thursday mornings in January. I don’t know if they are doing this in every town or not, but it would be worth it to check it out.

Packages in the mail

7 January 2009

I love to get stuff in the mail! I have been the official “mail-checker” everywhere I have lived. Today I got two fun packages. First I got my first ever etsy purchase: a really cute red damask sunglasses case from thirtyone13 designs. Check it out!

sunglasses-case(My friends mab and Britty have etsy shops too, you can check out their shops in my links if you scroll down.) It fits my glasses perfectly! I have a bad habit of putting them in my purse and the lenses get all scratched up. Also I got my fun Ann Taylor Loft purchases and I think they will all fit nicely, which I was sorta worried about having not bought much clothing online before.

I found this link on another person’s blog to day but I just had to share for you people with little kids.  It is a site where they make custom capes for kids to play with. It’s called Plum Apple Pear Designs and they are totally precious!  Knowing of my hubby’s love for all things superhero, especially Superman, I am sure that one day we will own one of these for a kid.

School has been going well this week. The kids are being good and I am reminded of how blessed I am to have this job of teaching some really sweet kids. And we have had four “spirit” days this week so that means wearing jeans/sweat pants and I LOVE when we get to do that. I have started a new thing of taking a shower and washing and drying my hair at night. This means I have more time in the morning to read my Bible, which I am usually AWFUL about doing during the work week. It is just so hard to get up any earlier. But this way, I don’t have to take a shower or dry my hair, so I can get up at 6 and still have 45 minutes but all I have to do is eat, get dressed, fix a lunch, and straighten my hair, so I have time to read. It has worked well for the past 3 days. I know it doesn’t really matter whether you spend time reading the Bible in the morning or evening, but it has been nice, when I am having a rough moment in my day, to remember something I read that morning.

In honor of the start of school…

smarterthansixthgrader

Well thanks to Hurricane Ike I am teaching kiddoes today instead of just hanging out with the teachers and getting ready for the kiddoes. So in honor of the fact that we are all doing math today, I thought I would see if you know some of what we are doing. Here is your problem for today.

Hannah is going to the ice cream store. She wants to order a cone with one scoop of ice cream and one topping. She has three choices of cone: waffle cone, sugar cone, or chocolate dipped cone. She has three flavors to choose from: strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla. She has two choices of topping: whipped cream or sprinkles. How many different combinations does Hannah have to choose from?

Please leave your answer in the comments and explain how you got that answer, as my students are currently learning three ways to solve this problem.
