Hospital Recommendations

Hospital Recommendations

Recently I visited a friend in the hospital who gave birth to a lovely little girl. It brought back memories from when E was born. My friend was wearing the hospital gown and it made me think about all the recommendations I got for what to take to the hospital, what I actually took, and what I actually used.

One thing lots of people said is to buy a pack of “granny panties” to wear the first few days postpartum. So I went to Target and bought a pack of the full coverage “briefs”. Well it turned out that this recommendation must be meant for people who normally wear thongs or tiny cute underwear on a regular basis. Because my normal underwear were just fine. I wear the plain jane Hanes (oh, that rhymes) and they provided plenty of support witout being those wierd-legged brief cut ones. So if anyone likes those, I happen to have a six pack of granny panties that has never been worn.

Another thing I packed were lots of tops that open easily for nursing. You know, not actual nursing shirts because I couldn’t bring myself to pay for shirts made just for that, but some with the criss cross top that can be pulled over. Now that I have nursed a baby for 9 months, I have decided that it is just as easy to wear a normal shirt and pull it up. I had a granny gown that buttoned down the front but that didn’t end up being that great either as it was cumbersome to undo the buttons, especially with one hand.

I also took lots of snacks! I mean I took: cheezits, animal cookies, peanut butter cheese cracker packs, life savers, minty life savers, granola bars, and Reece’s cups for the nurses. I don’t think we ate much of all that. I remember having a pack of peanut butter cheese crackers while I was alone in the delivery room while they took E up to get washed off. Those are probably the best tasting crackers I have ever eaten because I was so hungry! I think C and I ate a few of the animal crackers. And the nurses loved the candy! But otherwise, I just ate from the cafeteria, and it was actually pretty good.

I did like having normal clothes to wear instead of the hospital gown. But the outfit I chose to wear home was AWFUL! I had packed a loose maternity dress thinking it would look nice and be super comfy. But when the day came, I was feeling pretty yucky that morning so I put on some sweat pants and a sleeveless top. Well those are the ugliest pictures ever taken of me! I really wish I had worn something different for the leaving-the-hospital-with-the-new-baby pictures!

Also I took my hair dryer and straightener but didn’t really feel like using it. Well I wish I had used it because I would have looked nicer in the pictures. My air dryed hair looked pretty rough!

Oh well. It doesn’t really matter I guess. Everyone has different things that help make that time special and comfortable for them. I got spreadsheets and lists from people with their recommendations and it was so interesting to read and compile and try to decide what I would pack in “the bag”. If you have ever been in the hospital, what things were you glad to have with you?

Fill in the Blank Fun:

Fill in the Blank Fun:

{Happy Birthday Daddy!}

Found this and thought it was pretty amusing, so here you go!

  1. If I was on a first date with someone and s/he ordered crawfish , I would probably end the date early.
  2. When I’m sick I really want someone to bring me a cold wet washcloth for my forehead and bring me food and let me lay in bed.
  3. I know that some people really love fancy cars, but I don’t understand how they spend so much money on it.
  4. I know that some people think I’m crazy for spending so much money on purses and shoes, but I really love them. (To clarify, I don’t really spend THAT much money on them, I just like them.)
  5. I’m so glad that I’ve outgrown acne since high school (mostly).
  6. I am living proof that the stereotype about only children isn’t always accurate.
  7. I know that it is a made-up word; but ginormous is a permanent part of my vocabulary. (Sorry Lindsey!)
  8. I can’t wait for bedtime!
  9. The most common misconception about me is  that I don’t eat much.
  10. I wish I wouldn’t slouch but sometimes I just can’t stop myself.
  11. If I never heard the word (or phrase) wash-pronounced warsh- again, it would still be too soon.
  12. I have a hidden talent for reading signs really far away that no one would ever expect of me.
  13. I am not a fan of extraordinary rendition; but if it were to take place for crimes against leaving cabinet doors open then my husband should be the first person(s) on the plane to Guantanamo.

Let me know if you decide to do this on your blog!

Tagged by Chelsea!

Its been a while since I did a blog tag so here goes.

Chelsea at jrandchels.blogspot.com tagged me to answer these questions:

I’m supposed to tag 8 people to answer these questions:
1. What’s your current favorite secular song?

Since I am not working, I don’t have 1.5 hours in the car to listen to the radio anymore, so I don’t feel like I listen to much music. But I do like Taylor Swift and think “Our Song” is really fun and cute!

2. If you could do anything as a job (money is no concern) what would you do?

Actually, I think I am doing it. I feel blessed to get to be E’s mommy as my full time job right now! But other jobs that I think would be fun are:

professor in department of education at Baylor
owner of one of those cute random boutique-y stores
school librarian
professional blogger- a la Simple Mom style

3. Books or magazines?

Both! Magazines are good for quick reads, in the bathroom, at the dr office, etc. But books are great to get lost in when you can’t put it down til you are finished. One thing about magazines though, there are way too many ads these days. More ads than content!

4. How do you feel about Valentine’s Day?

I think its great! Although people should make sure others in their lives feel loved EVERY day!

5. What’s the first thing do you when you get home from work?

I would always change clothes, check the mail/let the dog out, and have a snack!

6. What is your favorite dessert?

Gosh. There are so many. Cupcakes. Cheesecake. Oreo Truffle Balls. Ohhhh Jess! I could eat one or fifty of those right now!

7. Who did you look up to as a child?

I had a teacher in 2nd and 3rd grade that I loved, Mrs. Faircloth. We dressed alike one day. I wanted to be a wonderful teacher just like her. There was also a lady who came and sang at our church with her family, Becky Matthews. I thought she was just beautiful and sang so great! And I have a great cousin Josie, who was also a teacher and I looked up to her a lot too.

8. Embarrassing moment from high school?

Well I fell off the commons once, as we liked to put it. Part of the commons in the middle of the school was this raised area and it is where we ate lunch. I think I scooted my chair back and the leg fell off the edge and I fell. But actually I can’t remember if that was me or one of my friends. I just remember us joking about falling off the commons. That is all that comes to mind.

I am not going to bother tagging anyone because people don’t really do it ever. But if you feel so inspired answer these questions too on your blog!

Honest Scraps

Honest Scraps

So my friend Leanna tagged me with Honest Scraps…sharing 10 real things about myself to my little blogging community. I have taken a while to do this, but here I go:

1. I really like to shop. It is one of my favorite things to do. Too bad it is not so good for my bank account…

2. When we went to Turkey a few years ago, I learned that I liked peach cobbler, Special K cereal, Honey Nut Cheerios and Coke Floats. I had never eaten those things much or at all in America because I thought I didn’t like them, but when they were the most like home food available, I sure did try them. And they are great!

3. My husband says I breathe really loudly since I have been pregnant. Like last night, he asked me to turn over because I was breathing so loudly in his direction!

4. With a few exceptions, the only two channels I ever watch are HGTV and TLC. Yes these shows have no real plot line and are about other people’s lives, but I still like them. Maybe because they are about shopping and decorating.

5. I think I would like to be an interior designer. I like the idea that someone would give me X amount of money and say “Ok, go buy stuff to redecorate my bedroom”.  Anyone want me to do this for them?

6. I abhor snakes. I can’t even look at pictures of them in magazines. I am so glad my husband is not one of those guys who likes snakes. I don’t think I could have ever dated him if he had a snake. He likes to rescue doggies but I am okay with furry things, just not scaly things.

7. I am really ticklish.

8. I am 27 years old and still really never wear makeup. I think I should, it looks better, but I don’t really know what to wear and I don’t like to take the time.

9. I type really fast and with my fingers on the home row keys. It pays to not cheat in keyboarding class. Whenever I would be typing in class and my students would comment on how fast I type, I would tell them that.

10. I don’t really like that many vegetables. I need to be like that guy in the V8 commercial who goes and drinks some V8 juice to make himself actually get enough fruits and veggies for the day.

Okay I made it to all 10!

So to pass the torch along, I tag anyone who wants to play!
