Here is another one for you. Especially if you are more word-y than math-y.

Complete the sentence by filling in the blanks with four words that each differ by one letter. The changed letter will be in the same position in each word, as in bake, bale, base, and bane.

Well thanks to Hurricane Ike I am teaching kiddoes today instead of just hanging out with the teachers and getting ready for the kiddoes. So in honor of the fact that we are all doing math today, I thought I would see if you know some of what we are doing. Here is your problem for today.

Hannah is going to the ice cream store. She wants to order a cone with one scoop of ice cream and one topping. She has three choices of cone: waffle cone, sugar cone, or chocolate dipped cone. She has three flavors to choose from: strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla. She has two choices of topping: whipped cream or sprinkles. How many different combinations does Hannah have to choose from?

Please leave your answer in the comments and explain how you got that answer, as my students are currently learning three ways to solve this problem.

Fraction Decimal Conversion

Fraction Decimal Conversion

smarterthansixthgraderIt’s that time again, folks!

My students are currently memorizing fraction/decimal conversions of commonly used fractions. For example, they need to know that 1/4 = 0.25 without having to work it out. We made flashcards in class and they have three trys to make a 100 on the quiz. I used a site called Quizlet to make a place for them to study. Click the link and take the test to see how many you know. Post your score in the comments section!

PEMDAS Answer

PEMDAS Answer

I love this!

Ok so PEMDAS stands for
Please : Parentheses
Excuse : Exponents
My : Multiplication
Dear : Division
Aunt : Addition
Sally : Subtraction

and Lydia, I think I may have learned Pretty Please too and the second P just stands for Powers instead of E for Exponents.
Another thing is that I have my kids circle the MD and AS because really those two go together and you do all the M and D from left to right and you do all the A and S from left to right. Its not that you do all the multiplying and then all the dividing.
LA: its interesting because you did the dividing all at once 12/2 and 4/8 and go 1/2 which worked out in the end anyway even though that is not the way I would have done it.

Here is my work:

72 – 4 + 12 ÷ 2 x 4 ÷ (5 + 3)

72 – 4 + 12 ÷ 2 x 4 ÷ 8

49 – 4 + 12 ÷ 2 x 4 ÷ 8

49 – 4 + 6 x 4 ÷ 8

49 – 4 +24 ÷ 8

49 – 4 + 3

45 + 3

48

We draw an upside down triangle around ours when we are done for those visual folks and we circle each step when we are going to do it.
So yeah, unfortunately Papa Steve might lose some points in my class.

So if you want to try again..here is another one:

23 + 10 ÷ 5 x (32 – 3) + 7 – 8

*Hint: follow PEMDAS inside the parentheses.
